The Green Town of the Arts

In Latvia, Rūjiena is known for its delicious and multi-flavoured ice cream. We’re often called the ice-cream capital. We think of ourselves more as an art-loving town. Several nationally and internationally known artists were born in Rūjiena. We have several artist studios, an art school, and the town is decorated with many pieces of art.

Our pride is three sculptures by Kārlis Zemdega that stand out against a background of quaint wooden houses.

We connect the future of our town with the art industry and we are committed to the development of the Art Centre, saving and restoring our old wooden buildings, and creating and maintaining our environment and a green zone. The Green Town of the Arts — that is how we would like to call ourselves.

We would like to live in a town in which the inhabitants feel comfortable and satisfied with life and are proud of their town. We would also like tourists to remember Rūjiena as a clean and friendly town in the north of Latvia.

In my youth, my native town seemed like a quite and simple place. Over the years I have come to realize that is a unique place with special people, interesting architecture, historical artifacts, and significant monuments. The town continues to grow near and dear, and that is why I am here — to give Rūjiena my greatest attention.
